Better. So much better. That’s how a cell was supposed to look! Drapes hanging from the windows, posters on the wall, inmates gathered round the table playing cards and having a jolly good time, a television sitting on the window sill, tattered plastic carpeting, ( it was tattered beyond recognition, but still it was carpet!) a carton of juice here and a bowl of apples there. It was plush compared to the five days of abysmal conditions I’d been subjected to. (more…)

Sunday morning, I woke up with severe burning soreness in my stomach. The hunger pangs had arrived with a vengeance.

Day 2

Saturday morning 6a.m, the siren went off indicating the morning’s head count.


Somewhere inside me I still harboured hope that the nightmare would be over in a matter of days and I could put the whole ordeal behind me. (more…)

Day 1

 A few  kilometres later, myself and a handful of criminals arrived at what was to become our new home for the next three months.(or so I thought)

Mulling over why I had to travel in a prisoner transport van, it became clear when the doors were opened. The media orgy was inconceivable. Momentarily blinded by an explosion of flashlights and microphones being shoved in my face, it was too late to duck. (more…)
